what to wear: with gray hair

grayhair_casualoutfitWearing gray or silver is fairly easy when you are gray or silver-haired.  I love the idea of mirroring your hair color in your clothing — it looks so fluid and beautiful and it’s something that all good personal stylists advise.

But, for you silver and platinum sisters without much pigment left, you need to add some color. Here’s a Spring outfit to keep you looking hip (it also works for any gray-haired lovely – just make sure you can carry the color.)

I am literally coveting this Milly halter top because it takes a beautiful warm orange and drops it on an off-white background.  Since most women are over 40 when they’re predominately silver (not all, mind you), it’s probably a good idea to cover the arms if you’re not so crazy about yours.  This Kenneth Cole stand-up collaricon jacket comes in a red/orange and adds just the right amount of color.

Pair your top and jacket with 7 For All Mankind Ginger jeans that are the silver standard for gals with hips.  Add a simple neutral suede sandal and Francesco Biasia bag such as these from 6pm.com — I could spend hours in this Zappos discount store where you can find Weitzman, Coclico, Sigerson Morrison for cheap!  The silver earrings mirror the pattern in the top and adds just the right detail.

  1. thanks for the reminder – sleeveless days are coming soon! I’ve got to get to work on my arms!!!! aack!

  2. I’m with you Ursula! time to start doing push-ups. :D

  3. Teresa, thank you for the terrific advice to us Silver Foxes who want to look chic, but not inappropriate! One question..I am silver with very fair skin and blue eyes, and I find sliver jewelry of any kind just “disappears”. Any suggestions?

  4. VB – try blue chalcedony or lapis drop earrings and pendants instead to complement your eye color. And wearing oxidized white metals will provide more contrast for you versus the shiny silvers.

  5. Thanks, Teresa. I love the idea of lapis and oxidized metals !

  6. I was just wondering if a jacket like this will be in style for a while?

  7. Hi Nicole! Yes, most definitely. The only thing that may wane is the color but if it works for you then it will be timeless….well, until you’ve worn it to death anyways. ;)

  8. working on getting the courage, so hopefully I will see you in the next year event ;-)

  9. I am 62, which gray hair, medium length. I have very pale skin and hazel eyes. Not sure what color jewelry to wear, I used to love red and black, but find with my hair color now, it is just too harsh. Can you help?

  10. I, like Maureen have gray hair- (just now letting it go al naturel) and hazel eyes, pale freckled skin. All my clothes are browns, rust, coral, green, and my jewelry gold. But my hair is no longer reddish brown. What colors do I wear now???
