what to wear: volunteer work

A Reader Asks:

Hi!  Help!  I do volunteer work helping homeless guests in an emergency shelter find jobs.  I want my clothing to set an example of professional, semi-casual business attire.  My challenge is that everything has to be machine washable, because the meeting room can trap odors from the kitchen, the laundry, bathrooms, etc.  I have always worked in corporate management jobs and am used to wearing formal business attire, which just won’t fly. Since I help out three times a week, I would love to have some options.  I think other people may have this same challenge: teachers, social workers, restaurant managers, some scientists, etc.

Thanks so much for your help.  I love your advice.

Wardrobe 911’s Style Prescription:

Bravo!  Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to your community, and doing it stylishly yet comfortably is important.  For business casual attire, all you need are some key basic pieces to serve as the skeleton to your wardrobe, which you can mix and match and have fun with.

Since you will be volunteering in an emergency shelter helping people find jobs, you’ll want to look professional, but still approachable.  Go with a neutral colored pant like this straight leg trouser from The Gap.  The classic style and rich earth brown shade can be combined with many colors and looks giving you more wear for your dollar.  Combine your trousers with a warm wrap sweater that you can pair with different blouses.

This beautiful flutter sleeve top adds a pop of color to your outfit and works well on its own for when you decide to remove your sweater.  Other great blouses that work with this look is this coral baby doll top or a simple white, navy or green tee.   The best part  is that every piece is machine or hand washable, so you don’t have to worry about unwanted scents clinging to your clothes and expensive dry cleaning bills.

Add a simple skirt and cardigan to your staples, and you’ll have days worth of different possible outfit combinations.  Don’t forget comfortable, taupe shoes that work with most colors.
