what to wear: running
As someone who enjoys running, when Brooks contacted me to test out their new Summer line of running gear, I happily obliged. Known for their running shoes, I was surprised to find that they’re now doing some stylish running gear. And since I recently got hit by a car out on my morning run (more like tapped),
I was very happy to discover that they sent a beautiful, saturated aqua hoodie. If you love to run in the summer early mornings or evenings, here is a great running outfit to consider:
- Brooks Viva Capri ($58) – OMG, this is the perfect running pant. The fabric has a nice hand to it – thick but not too thick – and it’s super comfortable to run in. The length hits right below your knees and it has a slight flare to balance out your hips. It’s extremely stylish. I’m hooked. The only downside is there is no little inside pocket for your key.
- PR Support Tank ($44) – if you are a rectangle, you may like this tank with side mesh panels. Although Brooks’ states that it has a ‘feminine’ shape, it doesn’t. As an hourglass, it was too tight at my bust and super baggy at the waist. I couldn’t wait to take it off — it was extremely uncomfortable for me because of the extra fabric lolling about at my waist. But for rectangles and more muscular builds, this would be a good tank to consider. The long length is a plus.
- Viva Jacket ($74) – I admit I was worried about running in a jacket that seemed to have a tight ribbed waist since they tend to ride up. Out on the streets, it stayed put. The color is flattering yet bright enough to stop those cars in their tracks! The detailing is stylish and there’s even an inside pocket for your ipod. I have never worn a short-sleeve jacket out running and I have to admit it was perfect for keeping the morning chill at bay yet I stayed cool throughout the run. I think they’re giving Lulu Lemon a run for their money with this one.
- Stability Running Shoes – depending on your pronation, you want a shoe that can support you and make your feet feel like they’re running on air. Every foot is different and you must try various shoes to find your perfect fit. I’m a New Balance gal and their shoes fit me perfectly. My husband has been an Asics guy since he was 16. My friend is a Brooks fan.
- Polar Watch – for monitoring your heart rate and calories burned.
Do you run? What do you love to run in? And, if you’re interested in getting a free, gently used (and hand-washed) Pacer Support Tank in a size L, leave a comment. I’ll randomly pick someone on Friday to win.

I’d love to win the running shirt! Thanks so much for giving it away.
I am a rectangle, and I could really use a new workout top! Thanks for the chance to win it =)
I’m training for a half marathon & would love to try this out!
I’ve recently started wearing Lulu Lemon for running and yoga. The bright colors and soft, seamfree pieces really make a difference. Whatever it takes to get me motivated . . .
What am I running in? Its terrible: two (2) sports bras, a long sleeve sun shirt that I bought for an Africa trip in 1996, a pair of awesome adidas running pants, maybe four years old, and shoes that are the same age.
I just started getting back out in the early mornings after taking two years off due to life circumstances: death, birth, launching a company, etc.
Really it is wonderful to be outside and active when the sun is rising. I told myself if I make it consistently for a month I’ll buy new pants & shoes. Do these Brooks capris come in full length?
I just ran my best 5K ever last week! My pace was 7:33. Yeah! I run in brand spanking new Brooks shoes (my fave since forever) and a random assortment of old sports bras, ratty race T-shirts and shorts, mostly New Balance and Nike. (Carissa–take care of your feet first!!! Your shoes are too old to be running in them!)
I’m a rectangle and would love to run in something more fashionable! Thanks, Teresa!
Carrissa – good for you that you are getting back out there. It is really hard to take that first step after not doing it for a while so a big congrats. A new workout outfit is always good motivation after your first month. Brownie is right — you need new shoes. You will get shin splints if you don’t — I can always tell when mine need to be replaced. The Viva comes in a long pant and petite pant: http://www.brooksrunning.com/prod.php?p=220143&k=26483
Brownie — 7:33?? wow! That is awesome — great pace.
Okay ladies — you are all inspiring and it sounds like adding something new to your workout wardrobe motivates you to go longer! The odds of winning are looking good!
