what to wear: best choices for women of a certain age
A Reader Asks
How do I choose classic-styled clothes suitable for a woman of a certain age and not give the wrong appearance? I would like to look fresh in style but not flaunting it like a 20 year old. And be affordable too. Most of what I see in stores screams too young or are very dowdy looking.

I can honestly say that you are not the first person to bring this to my attention. How do you purchase clothes that are age appropriate, stylish, yet casual? First of all I want to congratulate you on recognizing that there is a difference between a 20 year old wearing it and a 40 year old. Not to say that you can’t look fabulous at 40 - but let’s be honest, there is no fashion tragedy worse than someone trying to dress like a 20 year old (who is no longer 20!)
The good news is settling into 40 brings a confidence about you. You know who you are, you know your assets, and most of all you know what you like and what you don’t like.
So HOW does this translate when wandering through the department store where all you see are bright colored skinny jeans that make you cringe?!
Go back to what you know! Which is YOU! Don’t compromise who you are for a trend! Stick with the basics. If you are a woman who likes classic, traditional pieces, start there. Then take the trend and make it yours. What does that mean? Right now, everywhere you look there is color. Would I suggest you go out a purchase a bright tangerine blazer? No. What I would suggest is incorporating those bold colors into your wardrobe by accessorizing with them – try a fun scarf, an earring, or even a fun belt.
I have chosen an outfit that consists of classics: a blazer, a neutral shell, and a pair of dark denim jeans. Once you have the basics think of layering – what can I add next? I chose this animal print scarf because its sophisticated (yet playful) with a pop of orange. I also added a complimentary sage green ring (or two if you’d like) paired with an ombre’ flat. If you are wanting to add a little bit more color, you can always switch this Michael Kors tote to a different color such as pink, purple or aqua – remember, color blocking is huge right now so take advantage of this fun and wearable trend.

Really? I’m 43 and I must wear black, brown and beige? With a little bit of animal print for pizzazz? What is wrong with me wearing a bright skinny jean with flats and a neutral tunic? Honestly, I think I’d look great. My mother is 72. She would look fabulous in the outfit you show above but I would recommend she add a bit more color (necklace perhaps). I have to say I’m disappointed and a bit offended.
Hi Amy! The reader was asking what she could wear since she liked classic looks. When we answer reader questions, we have to take into account what would work for the individual, not the masses. So definitely understand how a few such as yourself wouldn’t gravitate to this particular choice. I for one like your idea of bright colored skinny jeans paired with a neutral top. I myself won’t do bright skinny jeans (been there done that) but its a great choice if it fits with your personal style!
Since I am the woman of a certain age (61) I appreciated a little suggestion in what to look in styles when looking in stores because of the trends of the clothes in stores. I would wear a bright tangerine blazer because the color looks good on me. The question was referring to what types of clothes to look for and the answer was in choosing separates that will blend to make a total look, in this example blazer, sleeveless shell, denim pants, and accessories. Unfortunately the color scheme chosen for a classic look was neutral tones, but the same effect can be done in colors too. I want to thank Nicole for the suggestions because she helped a lot to clarify what Styles to look for
I would also like to say “thank you” for this post
I was so excited to see Nikki’s post. Having had the chance to consult with her I was thrilled that her emphasis was on staying true to our fashion personalities. Very cool outfit & I love the bag!
I’m 42, and I think this outfit is excellent, very classy and chic. I would’ve worn it at 30 and I’d wear it now.
I just saw this and I am 60. I have to say, as I have in so many other places that I LOVE this- I am so tired of the horrible colors put out there by the industry for ready to wear. The T shirts from the basics, J Crew, Old Navy, Gap you name it, it seems all the colors are Bozo hot pink, Warning sign yellow, circus blue and hepatitis green, where are the dusty roses, the deep turquoises, the soft golds? This outfit shown is maybe boring to some of you because you are used to all the circus colors. Anyone wearing this would look like a million!
I’m 47 and totally agree with your suggestion about dress for you. This includes what’s comfortable for you, what’s affordable for you, what’s practical for you and what you consider stylish. Sure Nicole’s section may not be everyone’s cup of tea but think of your taste and budget and you will be on a winner.
