It’s been a while since I’ve written about being “gray” since my transition essentially ended over a year ago. And I’ve been meaning to get a proper before and after together for you and finally got around to doing it — with much photoshop manipulation (I’ll explain below.)

I know that going gray is an issue for every woman because many feel that it ages you or limits your job opportunities. I can see how that may be the case for some — there is gray hair that is best left colored in my opinion. But there are quite a few women that have platinum hair or dominantly platinum in which I think it looks lovely. I was lucky — probably because I started going gray at 19. People ask me all the time if I would ever go back to coloring and you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do so. I’ve had dreams where I had my hair colored back to auburn and I’d wake up in total terror — those are true nightmares for me.

So why the color nightmares? Here’s 3 reasons why — and hopefully it will debunk some gray hair myths you may have:

Gray hair — hair with no pigment — is soft. My hair is so much softer now AFTER I quit coloring it. Yes, I have a few crazies but not like when I colored my hair which was like straw (of course I didn’t know it was straw-like until I had normal hair to compare it to.)

Gray hair is not a sign of age. How you behave is. And, I’m not gray everywhere! uh-em.

Gray hair can be hip. It does not mean you are letting yourself go. Pu-lease. It’s how you wear it. Your overall personal style just gets magnified so you do want to wear the right colors because your coloring changes and you can’t wear the trends at all because you will look old. LOL — it’s true.

So, there you have it. The before photo shown is from a photoshoot so the lighting is fab and the current photo of me on right is from a very candlelit dinner at Bouchon with my husband — I had to photoshop the crap out of it to take the yellow overcast out, but this is pretty true to my coloring. I think — you don’t have to agree — that I look better and more authentic with my natural hair.

Adding a bit more volume on top of a skinny pant looks balanced and this sleeveless button-down top with a racer-back certainly does the trick. Wear a simple flattering white tank underneath to counter the deep openings in the back.

For shoes, wear something that you won’t slip in on the grass. These silver Pumas are cute and sassy. For when you’re not on the field, these DKNY silver snake flats do the trick.

Wearing a hat is the perfect way to protect your skin and show some style. This straw Fedora hits the right balance.

For playing croquet, try the Scottsdale croquet set by North Meadow. This set is definitely more sturdy than the typical ones you may find and is perfect for both adults and kids.

NO! Silvers do! Silver, gray, platinum — these are the hair colors that every person will experience in their lifetime…and yes, that means you. Whether you gray prematurely as I did or you gain them through the wisdom of your years, a new life awaits you. And let’s face it, some people won’t like it.

How many sexy gray-haired ladies do you see on TV? In commercials? In print ads? Perhaps some ‘adventurous’ fashion designers will showcase the beauty of silver but most often they end up in financial services ads. Ask Yasmina Rossi and Cindy Joseph; two beautiful women on the inside and out who model for a living — and, who happen to have silver and white hair.

Last week, several of us silver-haired sisters gathered at the Hudson hotel in NYC courtesy of the great Diana Jewell of Going Gray Looking Great. She wrote the book on it and pulled together the models (Yasmina, Cindy, Chazz), the writers (herself and the elegant Anne Kreamer of “Going Gray”), the beauty industry executives and entrepreneurs (Sue Phillips and Cindy Joseph), the fashion expert (moi) and some of the great women who have decided to go gray.

It was a luncheon that lasted 4 hours. One in which people kept stopping by to tell their stories of family members going gray, showing their gray roots and commenting on the gathering. It was inspiring. You see, gray is not about aging regardless of what the beauty industry has told us. I know we live in a youth-focused, anti-aging culture but, let’s get real: we ARE aging. I don’t care about looking younger, I care about looking beautiful as I age.

I wish that we would embrace our authentic beauty and recognize that how we carry ourselves and take care of ourselves speaks more about our age and vitality than our hair color. I dream of the day when I’ll see a beautiful silver-haired woman grace the cover of a magazine not for her age but just because. Because nearly 70 MM women in the US are over 40. Because more than 40% of women have some gray by their 40th birthday. Because silver is the new black. Because silvers DO have more fun.

======

Special thanks to Yasmina for taking the great picture of me and Diana. Also, if you live in LA or San Diego and you’re interested in getting your very own custom fragrance made by the expert, Sue Phillips, she’s holding events at The Nile Institute on Nemo Stress in West Hollywood this week and in San Diego on Saturday June 20. Just send her an email!

Diane von Furstenberg wrap top in a navy/orange print. If you feel it’s too low, wear a navy tank underneath.

Dark wash Ankle Skinny Jeans – by 7 For All Mankind. I typically shy away from skinny jeans but these have an 8″ side zip so you can flare out the leg if you’d like to balance your hips.

You definitely want to wear a heel with this outfit to give your butt a lift. Try these stylish yet comfy pewter wedges by Kenneth Cole – it’s 3″ high but feels like 2.5″.

Add a silver disc snake necklace for some interest

Make sure to carry a tote such as this Marc by Marc Jacobs totally turnlock tote. It comes in a light gray which is the perfect neutral for a silver sister.

Since air conditioners will be running indoors, make sure to carry a lightweight navy cashmere wrap.

Show Off Your Personal Style Contest!

If I see you wearing an outfit similar to this at the event, you’ll be entered into my special contest. I’m looking for who wears this look best by incorporating their own personal style into it. Prize will be a color consultation with me. So get crackin’, register for the event if you haven’t already (deadline is this Friday!) and I’ll see you in NY!

Wearing gray or silver is fairly easy when you are gray or silver-haired. I love the idea of mirroring your hair color in your clothing — it looks so fluid and beautiful and it’s something that all good personal stylists advise.

But, for you silver and platinum sisters without much pigment left, you need to add some color. Here’s a Spring outfit to keep you looking hip (it also works for any gray-haired lovely – just make sure you can carry the color.)

I am literally coveting this Milly halter top because it takes a beautiful warm orange and drops it on an off-white background. Since most women are over 40 when they’re predominately silver (not all, mind you), it’s probably a good idea to cover the arms if you’re not so crazy about yours. This Kenneth Cole stand-up collar jacket comes in a red/orange and adds just the right amount of color.

Pair your top and jacket with 7 For All Mankind Ginger jeans that are the silver standard for gals with hips. Add a simple neutral suede sandal and Francesco Biasia bag such as these from 6pm.com — I could spend hours in this Zappos discount store where you can find Weitzman, Coclico, Sigerson Morrison for cheap! The silver earrings mirror the pattern in the top and adds just the right detail.

It was five months ago that I chopped the colored hair off my head, which left me with an Annie Lennox type hairstyle that wasn’t half as cool. Although I knew my hair grew fast and it wouldn’t be short for long, there were days that I wanted to stick my head in the sand. I’m not going to lie or glamorize the process but I realized that it wasn’t the color of my hair that was causing me grief; it was the length. So, instead of reaching for my colorists phone number, I kept plugging on knowing that each month it was getting longer….and surprisingly more white and beautiful!

And although I tend to always focus on the positive and am a very optimistic sort of gal, the first four months was NOT pretty. My husband finally admitted recently that it was even tough for him. Here is what I experienced (everyone is going to experience something different when they finally do it):

Friends didn’t recognize me at first (even my husband!) — and for the first month, I scared myself countless times when I accidentally caught my reflection in the mirror.

People ignored me. This I was not used to. Not in a ‘look-at-me!’ kind of way but just in a general recognition of human presence. All of a sudden I was invisible to everyone. Which is why I started running again. Seriously though, it really hit me how much our society is focused on youth and that we do ignore our maturing population quite literally.

At first, my hair looked like I had a black and white tabby cat toupee stuck on the top of my head. The color was salt and pepper in the back and sides and white up front. As it’s grown out, the white hair has covered the dark parts and it looks more uniform and WAY better. So glad I didn’t call my colorist.

One thing I did do, that I recommend to anyone growing out their short hair no matter the color, was to get a haircut each month in order to guide the hair into the right style. Having a great haircut when you are gray or platinum is crucial. A bad haircut can age you by 20 years. You have to focus on staying hip in your hairstyle and clothes. And hip does not mean looking young; it means taking greater effort to look put together and stylish.

My hair is still growing out but now that it’s getting into the ‘cute’ hairstyle phase (the temporary photo is from a few weeks ago), I am noticing some good changes. Friends now covet my hair. LOL. People take a second look at me or sometimes just stare — which is weird. Some women who have gone pre-maturely gray like I have experience people giving up their seats on the bus and receive senior discounts at the store. Although I silently hope, I still have not been offered the senior discount at the supermarket. And, in my dreams I still have auburn hair. Apparently I haven’t ‘let go’….yet.

Trading Places

I am so excited to be announcing today’s article which is written by Diana Jewell, founder and editor of Going Gray, Looking Great! Her site has been a godsend to me and many of you who are transitioning. Today Diana and I are “trading places” for the day so check out my post on What to Wear When Your Hair’s Gray on her site!

===

Okay, so you’ve gone gray. You’ve somehow gotten through the mystery of transitioning, you may have a shorter new do, you’ve handled all the slings and arrows sent your way by friends and family, and as you sit there, staring at your new “face” in the mirror, two words come to mind: Now what?

Some women have likened going gray to a nine-month pregnancy. You’re busy germinating a new self. It’s exciting. There’s no doubt you feel a sense of wonder as you’re going through it – “I wonder if I’m going to like it?” “I wonder how gray/silver/charcoal it will be?” “I wonder if it will age me?” And you’ve undoubtedly been the center of attention, whether you’ve liked that or not. Well, now you’ve delivered. Any chance of post partum depression? Any chance you might feel like you’ve lost your “old” self?

I can happily report, not one woman I’ve interviewed, talked to, or heard from feels this way. To the contrary, they’re positively energized and excited. They like the natural “glow” they’ve gotten, they feel more committed than ever to making other changes, and they’ve discovered a whole new level of confidence they never knew they had. For many, it’s a life-changing experience. And it has nothing to do with the color of their hair.

Hundreds of women write in about this phenomenon to www.goinggraylookinggreat.com. Some of them are still transitioning, others have made it through. They all share this same, incredible verve.

That feeling never really passes, but it’s soon overtaken by another discovery – gray never stays the same way. Unlike dyed color, it is constantly evolving. Some days it looks whiter, some days more silvery. The funny thing is, we all used to want our hair to be a “certain” color. We paid big bucks for that – never let them see you change, or horrors, someone will guess that’s not your natural shade. Now we celebrate the evolution! Oh look, my hair looks whiter in this light. And, because it’s natural, we never fear that people won’t think it’s our “real” shade. Look ma, no roots!

Since we are a work in progress, we have fun continually experimenting with new makeup colors, new wardrobe colors. We get out of our ruts. We play, we experiment. As one visitor to the site wrote in, “I feel like a kid in a cosmetics candy store.” Now, whooo-hooo — whole new colors have opened up to us. The desire to try new things, new cuts, new products, new accessories, new everything is re-awakened.

So, yes, there’s a great afterlife to going gray. Or as most women put it now – going natural. Going back to being ourselves. Going back to seeing that maybe Mother Nature was right. It’s up to us to discover how to look sexy, dazzling, chic, or professional all over again. And we do it with great abandon – reinventing ourselves, day by day. It’s fun.

With apologies to Andie MacDowell, the women who feel coloring their hair proves they’re “worth it” will never experience the great “afterlife” of gray. The energy, the confidence, the giddy excitement that comes from re-discovering yourself. And that’s ok, too. Nobody has to be gray. But when you want to, when you’re ready, look out! It’ll rock your world.

 Stage One: The Decision
After years of messing up the bathroom floor with L’Oreal Feria #58 and spending countless hours and money in the colorist’s chair, there comes a point when a woman just surrenders. “I give up!” she says as she quickly touches up her fresh gray roots of 2 weeks. “The insanity needs [...]

“The insanity needs to stop!” And thus, secret meetings are held among friends and family. Options are weighed and debated. The worries of looking old are replaced with a vision of an elegant woman with beautiful white locks. And the decision is made. But the hair color paraphernalia in your bathroom cabinet stays.

Stage Two: Curiosity + Excitement

This stage is full of idealized visions of beautiful white, long locks. People with white hair seem to pop out of the woodwork and a whole new world of white-haired people seems to emerge. “Wow! Who knew there were so many young guys with white hair,” you muse. Your crush on Anderson Cooper grows even stronger during this phase. This is also a time of immense curiosity and long visits in front of the bathroom mirror wondering what lurks underneath all that colored hair. You may become pre-occupied with the possibilities and you start to venture out and learn more about what you can expect. Typically, the woman in this stage has no idea what’s in store for her – if she knew, she might start seriously looking in her bathroom cabinet.

Stage Three: Creative Hair Dressing + Impatience

Your roots have been manageable with the help of ColorMark’s color wand but slowly you’ve noticed that your roots are much longer and the magic wand has lost its power. Once a woman has grown out about 2” of white hair, the skunk stripe is so prevalent that wearing a pretty scarf or hat is a necessity. The temptation of L’Oreal is quite large. It is during this delicate yet critical stage that a woman may give in and go back to her colored locks.

Boredom and impatience set in and one may find themselves in wig shops and hair replacement boutiques looking for relief to their transitional-woes. A quick Internet search for Miracle-Gro for Hair is conducted. Women in this stage also tend to get their hair cut a bit shorter in anticipation and in preparation for Stage Four.

Stage Four: OMG! What did I just do?

This stage is probably the most difficult because there is no turning back the clock so to speak. Women in this stage have just cut off all their colored locks leaving themselves with 2” stubs of gray and white hair that stick straight up on their head. They begin to consult their husbands and male friends for short-hair styling advice. The attention or looks they used to receive from strangers have suddenly disappeared. Friends don’t recognize you. Strangers think you are some punk-mama. At times during this stage, a woman can feel just plain unattractive. Who is that person staring at me in the mirror? Why does everything look weird on me? Your image and reactions to it take some getting used to. Every night you find yourself staring in the bathroom mirror wishing for your hair to grow faster.

And then you realize something incredible. You have the ability to change everything about you right now because you are undergoing a huge metamorphosis and no one’s going to recognize you while you do it. You start to work out more (fat may jiggle but who cares! No one recognizes you anyway.) Although this stage is mostly focused on the physical changes, it is also in this stage that you start to think of the possibilities and implications of sporting gray hair. And the most important realization happens during this stage: YOU ARE FREE! And you’re never going back.

Stage Five: Acceptance + Confidence

By this point your hair has grown out to a length that you are happy in. The compliments start rushing in. You have a hip haircut, you’ll looking svelte and you are active and joyful. Well, that’s what I *think* will happen. I’m still in Stage Four so I’ll make sure to update you once I’ve arrived at the end of my journey.

Until then, I’ve photoshopped and updated my picture to show you the possibility. It is this color but the 2” stubs are now 2-1/2”. You have been warned.

If you’re growing out your gray, here are some tips from the trenches.

It’s been 9 weeks since I last colored my hair and the platinum outgrowth is about 1-1/2″ long. As I’ve remarked to my husband, I’m definitely sporting a nice skunk streak. But it seems to have stopped growing altogether. I guess that’s what happens — when I don’t want it to grow fast, it does and when I do want it to grow fast, it doesn’t.

About a month ago I went to see my hairstylist, Mary Amen. I figured the first step to embrace the “growing out phase” was to chop it off. “Go ahead, Mary. Cut it off. Do whatever you want with it.” Have you ever said this to a hairstylist? Typically their eyes gleam as you hear a big whoop come from their mouths — they love to cut hair short! What does mine do? She looks at me perplexed and asks, “Is everything okay at home Teresa?” After her initial shock and my reassurance that life couldn’t be better, she clipped and styled. Still auburn.

“It’s going to take about a year for your platinum to fully grow out,” Mary reassured. Okay. I can handle it. Everything was fairly easy to cover for the first month with the ColorMark wand but it has slowly lost its efficacy. At the 6-week mark, I moved on to magical hair-covering accessory number two: stylish scarves. Very w-i-d-e, stylish scarves.

The best are the small pocket square styles (love the Hermes ones!) because they’re easiest to tie and keep on. I also like the long and narrow scarves because you can double wrap them for more coverage. Just pin them down so they don’t fall off. I haven’t tried the latest diamond-shaped scarf by Alexander McQueen but it looks like the perfect option. Another good trick is wearing a super-wide headwrap — tres chic!

I figure at the rate I’m going (1/2″ every 3 weeks) I’ll be at 2″ by end of month and the scarves won’t be able to cover the white anymore. Since I can only go 2 values lighter than my auburn, I can’t go platinum blond (don’t think I begged!) So, I’m out looking for other viable options. For my research I’m visiting a very reputable hair clinic here in San Francisco that does wig fittings. Now that will be a fun post because you’re going to discover a rather silly side of me.

Until then, I don’t leave the house without covering up…and I now fear the wind.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

I bet you thought I was out having fun, BBQing and drinking Caipirinhas. I am. And I am also here with the lovely Mary Amen who is the most amazing stylist here in San Francisco. She takes care of me and all my wonderful clients.

Mary and I have been long discussing my decision to go gray. Well…we have discovered that we weren’t exactly talking apples and oranges so Mary is here to set us all straight. Mary…take it away!

Hope all is well everyone and you’re enjoying your Independence. Mary Amen, your HAIRAPIST here. My special mission is to help us all be on the same page when it comes to gray hair.

Often, Teresa and I have spoken about going gray. It’s a Q & A session that began for women, I am certain, the minute we started walking upright and purchasing hair color products.

I always ask, “Is the hair gray or is the hair platinum?” because there is a definite distinction and compatibility or incompatibility, between the two.

Usually, a true gray tone will consist of several levels of gray, which have a tendency to look very drab and make ones complexion appear ash and drawn. This creates more shadows on a persons face and is not flattering.

Then there is platinum. Platinum is glorious. Platinum is iridescent. Platinum is what every person thinks of when they think of gray. Platinum goes with everything, looks distinguished and sophisticated. Platinum is actually almost clear and reflects color. “Stunning” is how Teresa described gray to me. After further discussion we realized she meant platinum.

So which color are we now talking about when we discuss whether an individual should grow out their natural hair color as they age? Gray or Platinum?

The easiest way to determine if you’re platinum, is to take this simple test. Look around and find a sheet of copier paper. If you can lay a strand of your hair on this sheet of paper and not be able to see it, your hair is most likely platinum. You will see a sheen on the paper as the hair reflects light and shows its luminosity. It will sparkle. Does it?

When we think of gray, what comes to mind. Your Sub Zero appliances, a battleship, an elephant? Gray has a tendency to make women look matronly and 10 years older than their actual age.

Teresa: Great! just want I want to be thought of … a battleship.

It is not a pleasant statement to make, but I do not want to insult anyone’s intelligence and I am here to make women look fantastic. So now we can all be a little bit more synced when we think of going….platinum! No one wants to go gray. We all want to go platinum.

Teresa: Can you make someone who is gray, platinum?

Well, our time is up! Teresa, you are always a delight. See you at Chocolate Drop.

xo,

Mary Amen
THE HAIRAPIST

Stay tuned for next months installment of “To Grey or not to Gray..” with THE HAIRAPIST, Mary Amen. And in case you were wondering, I have a full head of platinum and looking forward to growing it out.

About 18 months ago, I did a post on one woman’s decision to eliminate her colorist and go gray. It has probably been one of the more popular posts here at Wardrobe 911 because it’s frightening and empowering at the same time. On one hand you are embracing the aging of your body yet on the other hand, you are finally giving in to the fact that you no longer look young. That can be really tough, especially when you still FEEL young.

So when is the right time to stop coloring your hair? It’s different for everyone. Some never started coloring their hair. Others let their gray grow out and then eventually start coloring it again. Some do it around their 50th birthday. Some never stop.

A beautiful hair color can enhance your looks, your coloring, and can be a true security blanket. So what do you do if you decide to stop coloring your hair? How do you hide the obvious outgrowth?

Well, I started going gray when I was 19. After 22 years of coloring my hair (I’m 41), I’ve made the not-so-easy decision to stop. Why? There are two reasons: one practical and the other more personal.

One reason is that I hate spending 3 hours getting my hair colored every TWO weeks. Most women touch-up their roots every 6 weeks. About two years ago, I started having to do it every 4 weeks. Last year, every 3 weeks. And now? I’m at my 2 week mark and I have an inch outgrowth. Colormark’s colorstick works great for now but anything over an inch will get trickier.

My second reason is that I really want to know what I look like with white/gray hair and a young face. It’s complete curiosity. There is a lot of fear around it too – especially because of what I do for a living! But after sitting down with my husband and having a long discussion about it, I realized I’m ready. He even said “You know, there is something elegant and confident about a woman with gray hair who has a youthful demeanor. Gray hair doesn’t make you old, how you feel about yourself does.”

So, with that I am completely excited about going gray. How many of you are with me? How many of you (regardless of age!) are ready to embrace your gray? I’ll post once a month on my progress (with pictures!) along with giving you pointers on how to do it gracefully. I’ll also be holding my first teleseminar in July that will include easy hairstyle tricks that you can implement to hide your roots.
