savvy looks: organic on a budget

We all like to think that we are doing our best to save the earth, but to be honest, recycling isn’t going to cut it! Of course, I’m all in favor of changing my habits if it also means I can do a little shopping at the same time. That’s why I’ve created a look that is completely organic with some pieces even donating proceeds back to maintaining our home planet, curbing almost any feelings of buyer’s remorse. Organic actually refers to anything that is made without the use of any additives, except those deriving from animal or vegetable origin. And organic isn’t necessarily code for higher costs, every piece here is under $100 and totally fabulous.

Stem Double Layer Racerback Knit Dress: Just because it’s organic doesn’t mean you have to wear a potato sack! This super soft and comfy dress (with pockets!) has been pigment dyed to a bright fuchsia hue and is made from organic cotton.

Carrots Kisses Lip Kit: Who knew you could shampoo your hair and save the earth at the same time? Yes to Carrots offers organic hair and face products that are reasonably priced and available at Target. Try the namesake Carrot Lip Butter for a fresh take on lip balm. A portion of each sale goes towards their “Yes to Seed Fund” which educates children about living healthier lives and the importance of being environmentally conscious.

Global Girlfriend Earrings & Bracelets: www.globalgirlfriend.com offers so many choices for beautiful and delicate jewelry, each with a unique story behind its origin and the artists that create it. Every purchase is Fair Trade which helps support the female artisans in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world. These delicate earrings are a perfect addition… and, to keep the look from being too sweet, add some layered bangles and cuffs, almost all of which are under $30.

Ocean Minded Kapu Sandals: These sandals have a playful striped organic cotton lining and the soles are made from recycled car tires. The sandals look natural but the overlapping straps gives them some sassiness.

Another great site to check out is www.commonthreadz.com which creates eco-friendly t-shirts. Every shirt you purchase provides either a school uniform or a months worth of food for an orphaned child in Africa. See how easy it is to make a difference? Happy (sustainable) shopping!
