reader question: shoes with casual skirts
Reader Question
I wear skirts more times than not, since they’re more flattering than pants on my frame. My issue comes in with what shoes to wear with casual skirts. I get tired of wearing flip-flops and sandals because they aren’t very supportive walking around for long distances.
Any suggestions on an alternative that has more support but is still cute?
Wardrobe 911′s Style Prescription
We love skirts and dresses which are so comfortable to wear during the warmer months and sometimes easier to fit on a body than pants. Finding supportive and comfortable shoes that look good with casual skirts can be hard, especially if you like to add a little height. Since the casual skirt you wear depends on your legs and style, here we show some walkable shoe options for varying skirt lengths that are a nice option to the “Frankenstein” shoe.
- Short skirts: Since there are many short skirts and minis out there, and if you are in your 20′s or early 30′s, then this skirt looks best with a flat to keep it casual. Here we show a simple floral-print skirt paired with Stuart Weitzman’s adorable “Dotsalot” flat in yellow.
- Knee-length skirts: A great casual knee-length skirt like a roll-over jersey skirt can be paired with either a comfy (yet stylish) flat like these snakeprint flats by Cole Haan or a more supportive wedge sandal that is easy to walk around long-distances in. Something like the Naot “Valencia” style could work.
- Ankle-length skirts: These tiered gauze skirts are perfect with a form-fitting tank. Yes, they look great with flip-flops and I would suggest only a sandal with them. This sandal by Born (called “Kristie) not only has arch support, it provides more stability and a bit of a heel for a little lift.

The Born sandals for ankle length skirts, with arch support, are perfect. Flip Flops are SO over worn. There are many other choices-thanks for pointing them out.
