how to wear: the sweater dress

The sweater dress is all throughout the stores this season and there’s something for everyone: some short, some knee length, some fitted and some drapey. Here we show two different styles and how to wear.

Cowl neck sweater dress by Rachel Pally. The dress comes in a black or berry color. This right-above-the-knee dress has blouson sleeves and follows the line of your curves. Pair it with:

The Vince boyfriend sweater dress has cute pockets at the bottom and hits mid-thigh. It looks great on inverted triangles and even rectangles can wear because it floats over the tummy area. Because it is short, you want to wear a legging underneath. Try these thick and comfy Theory Stadium skinny pants – they provide more coverage than a legging and look super sleek.  Add some style with:

  1. As always, you’re the best, Teresa! As a short hourglass/slight triangle with a serious booty, I’ve been wondering for awhile if I can wear the sweater dress. My fear is that it would cling to and add too much bulk to my butt. Love the Rachel Pally dress and how you styled it. I have tall (not quite up to the knee, but def above mid-calf) high heeled foldover boots in black suede that I am hoping might work with this look. Is there anyone who should just skip the sweater dress look? I’m 5’1″ and wear a 32D bra, have a clearly defined waist, and wear size 30 jeans. Should I run away or give it a try?

  2. Hey Karen! Your boots sound divine and would look great. Because it is hard to hem sweater dresses, I would suggest going for the turtleneck sweater dress by Elie Tahari that is in Bloomingdale’s right now. It hits above the knee on a 32″ inseam gal so it could work on a petite gal – it would hit just below the knee. I would give it a go — the weight of the knit is light enough to follow the curves but heavy enough to not cling.
