how to wear: long cardigans

Remember that episode of Sex and the City where Miranda asks if she can get away with wearing a sweater throughout the weekend in Atlantic City in hopes of hiding all the baby weight she had gained?

Well, that trusty little sweater just happened to be a long cardigan and ended up being the perfect solution for her!  Long cardigans (aka sweater coats) are a great wardrobe basic because they create effortless layered looks and are still considered current and stylish. They are perfect for lounging around on a lazy weekend outing, dressing up for a fun day in the city, or topping off your look for a business casual day at work.

If you are tall, then you can pull off the longer versions which look fashion-forward with a simple, flowy top and either leggings or slim jeans.

If you are petite, try a shorter version that still passes the hips.  Pairing it with a pencil skirt can create a sleek look if the top (perhaps a draped neckline) is fitted.

If you want to take your long cardigan up a notch for lunch or shopping in the city, accessorize with a simple belt. Long cardigans can be very work-appropriate for business casual environments because they are not as structured as a jacket but still pull an outfit together.

Do you own a long cardigan?  If so, how do you wear it?

  1. Just today I was craving a long open front cardigan, preferably in chocolate.

I’m addicted to the long cardigan. I feel so hip & fashion forward in them. I wear them over lingerie type camisoles, over button-up type wovens, over knit tops too. My bottoms are either jeans or cotton/spandex trousers, sorry for that boredom. I feel they polish the mommy image.

That cream one is very pretty, is that Nordstrom?

  2. I have two long cardis: one from Madewell (on sale!) and another from Zara. I love wearing them, but since I’m not so curvy at all, I usually wear them both with a wide belt to make me look like I have curves. I wear them with anything from t-shirts to button downs at work.

  3. I also wear mine belted, usually over a pencil skirt and cami/tank or sometimes over a sleevless dress to make it office appropriate.

  4. I live in my long cardis! I wear them with everything, but especially over my short summer dresses with a long tee and tights under. They just make everything so cosy.!
The only rule with them is to keep it slim fitting on the lower body otherwise they look silly. Long dresses wouldn’t work but short ones which don’t show from the back or ones that only show a bit are fine.
