how to wear boyfriend shorts

Early last year, the boyfriend jean made it's debut and many gals took to the trend because it was super comfy and chic, thanks in part to the ever fashion-forward Katie Holmes. So it comes as no surprise that this summer we have been given the gift of boyfriend shorts — they're just as sexy as short-shorts but leave a little more to the imagination. The key to keeping these shorts looking like you swiped them from your man-friend's closet, is in adding those feminine touches that only we girls can pull off.

Boyfriend shorts – The masculine feel of these shorts is in the fit and the details. Look for a pair that looks slightly worn and hit about mid-thigh. These ones from Charlotte Russe are the perfect look and price to keep you relaxed all summer. Keep them slightly fitted, jeans that are too baggy will just look sloppy.

Top – Look for a tee or tank that is a little blousy, but not over-sized. Keeping it loose plays up the boyish nature of the shorts, this nautical-inspired top from Gap is the perfect match.

Belt – This belt keeps the look relaxed but adds a surprise pop of color. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to wear it with everything in your closet!

Necklaces (Goldtone & Turquoise Necklace and Bird Necklace) – Finish the look by layering a few necklaces with different lengths. The Rachel Roy for Macy's collection is amazingly unique and wonderfully affordable.

Sandals – To keep this look feminine go for a pair of great sandals with girly details, whether it's a bright color or some pretty flowers. Of course, espadrilles are always sexy and definitely summer appropriate. This pair from Aldo adds a little sparkle in a metallic silver.

Stylist Tip

If you have an old pair of boyfriend jeans hanging in your closet and collecting dust, take some scissors to them and create your own boyfriend shorts. Simply roll them up a couple of times and tack the hems on the side.
