Some people love the 90′s others well… not so much.  Like it or not the 90′s trends are back in the stores. You might have seen vintage rock shirts or graphic tees, ripped and printed denim, neon, plaid, body con dresses, cropped tops, and booties.

We want to help you avoid looking like the outdated 90′s women, which includes NOT tying the shirt around the waist,  to a more modern, put together version.

Start with the bottom first to help you create the outfit. We chose these cropped 7 for all Mankind jeans that have minimal destroying and fading, anymore and it would be too excessive.

Then choose a fun t-shirt like this Sol Angeles wave tee. Pick a plaid shirt to really pull the outfit into a 90′s feel, but wear the plaid shirt over the tee and unbuttoned. Keep the two tops in the same color family so that you don’t end up looking sloppy.

Add some fun Accordion Hoop Earrings and long necklaces! Pull on these Splendid oxford shoes. Throw on a leather biker jacket to complete the look!

Hopefully, you might feel a little more confident in putting an outfit together when encountering these trends when you shop.

It’s ALREADY July (as if you didn’t need another reminder) and it’s that time of year when summer bbqs and get togethers with family and friends are happening more and more often.

Personally, I love summer clothes and creating outfits during the warm months, but a huge question that many people have is how do I look cute, stay cool and comfy all at the same time when going to casual bbqs and gatherings?

Don’t worry, this outfit should help give you some inspiration and a step in the right direction. Choose a basic item first, like these cute and comfortable cotton twill “Peace” shorts by Sanctuary, which come in many different colors.

Next, choose a fun summery, printed top. This top by Aryn K. has a great tribal/Aztec feel. Add some flats that you can play around in all day like these Steve Madden pair.

Lastly, pull your outfit together with some accessories that compliment the outfit. This pyramid gold and snake necklace by Hive & Honey is perfect. Add some over-sized shades by Balenciaga and top it off with a Brixton fedora.

If you have a triangle body type, here’s an outfit for you to try for the warm weather. It’s perfect for a casual weekend gathering or just running around getting your errands done.

You want a simple a-line jersey skirt that falls gently over your hips.  Three Dots makes an excellent one but if you are on a budget and want various different colors, try this Old Navy Roll-Over Jersey skirt for $15.

For tops, you have a couple of options depending on the weather and if you’re comfortable baring your arms.  Boatneck tees are perfect for triangles because they elongate your shoulder line.  Here’s a pretty yellow one for $14.50.  Another option is a tank with some ruffles or other detail at the bust. This navy ruffled tank is under $40.

For accessories, add a medium tan or brown neutral color such as these cute Dolce Vita sandals, natural straw hat and a big wood bangle.  All are priced perfectly for a gal who likes to mind her budget.

With Spring in full bloom, most women have trouble staying cool and still looking professional. Here’s an outfit for a business casual environment that transitions perfectly to an after-work happy hour. It works perfectly for the triangle body type or the elongated hourglass that has a smaller bust.

A sophisticated floral print top such as this one by J.Crew has a high surplice neckline and ruching at the shoulder line to draw the eye up.  It’s long enough to wear outside of a dark wash denim pencil skirt, also by J.Crew.  The top comes with a self-tie belt but by adding a golden yellow leather woven belt instead, you are creating a nice complementary harmony that showcases your waist.

Since you’re at work, jackets are important and this beautiful L.A.M.B Linen Jacket adds just enough detail at the bust to create balance and is perfect fabric for the warm weather.  If your work allows sandals, then these Biviel yellow wedges certainly pull it all together – they go to size 11 which is always a plus in our book.

4. Juicy Couture Cowl Tee. Perfect for rectangles, this jersey silk-blend cowl tee has some great nail head detail at the top and back. With a slightly padded shoulder, flattering neckline, and draped silhouette it can be worn with a belt if you’re an hourglass or triangle or without if you’re a rectangle.
5. Lafayette 148 Giada top. The elbow sleeve is one of my favorites; especially if you hate your arms! Lafayette 148 is a favorite of  those that want work appropriate wardrobes so this top is perfect for wearing to work and then to cocktails after. The square neckline is very flattering and you can add a statement necklace to dress it up or you can keep it simple and casual paired with jeans. It comes in 5 colors including black and white so you really can’t go wrong.
6. Robert Rodriguez satin one-shoulder top. Saving the best for last. This is such a great top because you wear it out to a club with jeans and some rockin’ shoes or dressed up for an elegant party with a satin skirt. Great for gals with broad shoulders.

With party season in full gear, you may find yourself attending a company holiday party, hitting a friend’s house for some casual holiday cheer, or going to see the Nutcracker with the family. Wherever this holiday season finds you, you want to have a few great go-to pieces that you can easily mix and match with your existing wardrobe to create some festive outfits.

One piece that seems to be forgotten until the last minute is a jacket or warm wrap. Reader Question

I am 47 and started dating again and I am really at loss as what to wear to my dates. I found your suggestions about what to wear on the first, second and third date. I love them. Dresses for date #2 and #3 are perfect for a really nice restaurant, however, I would like to know what to wear if I am going just to a local low key Mexican or Indian restaurant, or to museum. Could you please, suggest something that does not include jeans, since I really don’t like wearing them.

Wardrobe 911′s Style Prescription

There are usually only two reasons for why someone doesn’t like to wear jeans:

1. They haven’t found a pair that looks good on them that they like, or
2. It’s because they are a polished chic kinda gal who doesn’t do jeans

The answer is critical to what my advice to you would be so I’m going to assume the later and style your outfit based on what I know about the gal that doesn’t do jeans.

If you find yourself in a store these days, you’ll be hit with few options for nice pants that aren’t for work.  The casual ones are unfortunately either harem (eek!), sequined (ack!) or frumpy (no!)  — not what you want to wear on a date.

Luckily, there are a few that are hiding in the racks that would work well and one of them is the Theory Enosa knit pant.  It is sleek, thick and comfy yet casual and elegant. Calvin Klein and Diane von Furstenberg also have pants made out of this material this season and it’s a great option to jeans.

Keep it casual with a simple, yet still a tiny-bit-feminine, black ruffle tank.  The ruffles are low-key and will subtly peek out from underneath this hourglass-perfect camel sweater. Add an interesting, bold pearl necklace or a long necklace to create a more casual-elegant vibe.  You’ll definitely want to add some sex appeal with these high-heeled suede booties by Stuart Weitzman (they go to 10.5.)

The LBD dress has become a core in one’s wardrobe so my goal is to provide fashionable silhouette recommendations for all body types.  Since the styles are updated each season, it’s tempting to purchase a dress based on the current trend versus what is right for you.

Here is a stunning LBD recommendation for Rectangle and Triangle Body types. (Hourglass and Inverted Triangle body types can refer to Little Black Dress, Part 1). Rectangle and Triangle body types look best in sheath silhouettes since the dress falls straight over the waistline area and creates a nice line.  Look for medium to heavy-weight fabrics.

Bailey 44 “Supernova” Dress – this dress is made of a stretchy knit and it is lined which is a plus. The striking embedded beads and faux pearls in the neckline are a fashionable statement this season. The V-Back of the dress adds a nice dimension.

Linea Paolo ‘Jacadia Sandel’ - these suede platform pumps are hip and fun. They come in several colors and are available up to a size 13.

Diana Disco Clutch by Laura Merkin – the shiny gunmetal silver compliments the gray beads that are found in the jewel collar.

Diane von Furtsenberg Balia Jacket (not shown) – this eyelash knit jacket is luxurious and worth the splurge. There is a gathered elastic banding in the back that helps give an hourglass illusion.

Beaded Band Ring – this silver plated black diamond ring adds the final touch.

I worked on a television shoot this week for plus-size women and styled the models, who were sizes 14 and up.  It is surprising that more retailers don’t offer clothing in these sizes, especially since the average American woman is a size 14.  We happened to have Lane Bryant provide the clothes for the shoot, and I have to say, I was impressed.  They offer on-trend designs at a great price.

As far as I’m concerned, the “rules” for plus-size women are no different than they are for smaller sizes:  dress for your body type and always try to create an hourglass silhouette to balance out your proportions.

The outfit shown is for a plus-size triangle.

• I chose this textured sateen shirt in a bright color to keep the emphasis on the top of the body.

• Triangles tend to have small waists, so belt it if you’ve got it!

• Again, draw the eye upward with some pretty earrings.

• As always, a great pair of jeans goes a long way.  Lane Bryant offers three different fits, by body type, and their “right fit” denim is actually on sale right now!

• The icing on the cake is this pair of splurge-worthy Marc Jacobs booties. The Nine West Ignatious Ruched Boot (not shown)  is another option.

The sweater dress is all throughout the stores this season and there’s something for everyone: some short, some knee length, some fitted and some drapey. Here we show two different styles and how to wear.

Cowl neck sweater dress by Rachel Pally. The dress comes in a black or berry color. This right-above-the-knee dress has blouson sleeves and follows the line of your curves. Pair it with:

• Agate pendant braided leather necklace
• Elegantly Waisted double belt in cognac adds some interest
• Ribbed wool tights in acorn paired with a yummy knee-high wedge BCBGirls tobacco suede boot

The Vince boyfriend sweater dress has cute pockets at the bottom and hits mid-thigh. It looks great on inverted triangles and even rectangles can wear because it floats over the tummy area. Because it is short, you want to wear a legging underneath. Try these thick and comfy Theory Stadium skinny pants – they provide more coverage than a legging and look super sleek.  Add some style with:

• Stormy blue and gray “Starry Nights” scarf
• Boots  look cute with this as well so try either a short ruched boot like Naturalizer’s black boot or go crazy with the over the knee boot trend with a Belle by Sigerson Morrison cuffed suede boot in gray.

Last weekend I  saw the documentary September Issue and was inspired by all of the gorgeous dresses. This is the perfect film to see with a group of friends, so I do recommend it if you are interested in the fashion world. After the movie, my friends and I went for tea and thought it would be fun to dress up and spend an afternoon in the city.

Here is a classic and polished chic look that can be worn to an afternoon  event including a play, benefit or symphony. This outfit can even be worn to a bridal shower. For your everyday business wardrobe, you want to make sure you have some basics in your closet and then add some color and style with your accessories to keep it current.  Here’s an outfit for wearing to work as the weather gets cooler:

Cashmere funnel neck sweater.  JCrew uses the best cashmere out there so this is worth the investment.  Get one in a simple neutral so you can easily mix and match.

Theory Emery charcoal trouser. This is a wonderful wide leg (but not too wide) pant that is super comfortable. By wearing them with a charcoal top, you create a monochromatic (all one color – different value) look that comes across polished.

Every gal needs a good go-to black jacket for work.  I love the stretch gabardine versions by Diane von Furstenberg. BUT, when I saw this Marc by Marc Jacobs Knit Jacket, I couldn’t resist.  It’s at a great price ($168) but it is 100% cotton so it will fade eventually.

To add some punch, belt the sweater with a purple patent belt. This has ruching in the back for a perfect waist-defining fit.  Wearing a dark purple suede bootie by Tahari and carrying a classic Dooney & Bourke croc tote in the same color adds style.

A maxi dress in a natural fabric is a perfect outfit for a daytime wedding this summer.

• This strapless maxi dress from KAS Designs is a great look for a triangle.  The top creates a horizontal line and visually widens the top of the body to keep it in proportion with the bottom. The length of this dress covers fuller hips and thighs and can actually make the body look longer and leaner as well.

• For walking in the sand, you’ll need some pretty flats. These Diego Di Lucca – Gabby sandals are simple yet feminine.

• These gorgeous chrysoprase earrings are a match for the dress and the beach location.

• This Straw Tote by Lily Pulitzer is dressed up just enough for a beach wedding.

• And of course, don’t forget your sunnies!

If you plan on taking a mini-vacation over an extended weekend, you don’t need to lug a suitcase full of clothes.  Instead, you want to have a couple of outfits for day and evening tucked into a cute carry-on.  Since most women over 40 (not all!) like to cover their arms a bit, you want an easy dress that is perfect for a casual chic weekend that can be worn over a bathing suit,  for site-seeing during the day, or for a casual evening out. Here’s an outfit for inspiration:

• Vince shirred yoke dress in a comfy jersey fabric that looks fantastic worn with a contrasting green belt instead of the fabric belt that is included.
• Keep it stylish with a wedge cuffed leather sandal.
• Minimal jewelry is usually best when the belt and shoes take center stage so a simple cuff bracelet for evening or teardrop earrings for day are perfect.  And, don’t forget some stylish shades!  These black sunglasses look amazing on a longer face and the inside teal color adds a unique element.
• You want luggage that has enough room for a weekend’s worth of clothes but isn’t too big.  This stylish nylon weekender is the perfect solution.

If you’re planning a fun daytime boating trip on the river, lake, or bay, then today’s outfit should hopefully inspire you.  When you’re on a boat, the temperature can change dramatically; when the boat’s not moving, you’re boiling hot and when it starts hitting fast speeds, you end up  shivering from the wind and spray.

This thin windproof, lightweight jacket packs up to almost nothing in your nylon tote and is the perfect antidote.  Since you’re probably wearing a swimsuit, you want to wear some easy pull-on pants.  These cotton gauze pants by Splendid have elastic and a drawstring waist…and come in four colors.

For a top, any tee will do but I do love a nice summery button-down shirt with sleeves to protect my skin as much as possible.

Since I am asked frequently what the best top styles and jeans are to stock up on for each body type, I decided to do a post to share with you some of the best. If you have read my Recipe Box, then you’re familiar with some of these styles and probably have some sitting in your closet.  Your core wardrobe is based on your core neutrals so that you can easily mix and match.  Add a favorite color or two to round it out and you have an effortless wardrobe.

The best tee styles for your body type:

• Three Dots Supima Cowl Neck – the fabric is the perfect weight and with a soft draped neckline, this style looks perfect under a blazer for work or alone on the weekend. The cowl neck comes in various sleeve styles: 3/4 sleeves, short sleeves and sleeveless. Every hourglass, rectangle and inverted triangle should have one of these.
• Three Dots bateau neck tee – for triangles and gals who have smaller busts, the bateau neck tee is the essential tee you should have in your wardrobe. Again, I think Three Dots is best because they last — the quality is great.

• 7 For All Mankind Gingers – this style rocks and looks good on everyone. Cut fuller through the thigh and in a beautiful, lightweight dark denim, they feel wonderful on. The rise is 9″ which covers well and is non-frumpy.
