I am a stylist and make-up artist for the entertainment industry and now have expanded my services to include customized personal style consultations for my clients. I plan on sharing fashionable style advice and makeup tips with you.

A little bit about me:  My company is named Style & Image by kelsey. It’s based in Center City, Philadelphia and services the surrounding regions including, New Jersey, New York and Delaware. Hi there Wardrobe 911 Readers!

As a new West Coast Style Correspondent to the Wardrobe 911 Style Blog and member of the Stylist Collective, I wanted to introduce myself.  As a personal style consultant and founder of Cara Henderson Style Consulting, I dress clients for success throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.  Whether you work in San Francisco’s downtown financial district or in the business casual environment of Silicon Valley, or if you are taking a weekend get-away to the Napa/Sonoma wine country or attending the opera opening, my job is to make you feel confident about yourself and your wardrobe!

The San Francisco Bay Area has a unique style that includes both cosmopolitan and urban attitudes along with influences of the laid back, West Coast, California lifestyle.  The Bay Area is the birthplace of new and fresh ideas, yet it is also steeped in tradition.  All those aspects that make San Francisco such an interesting and dynamic place are also reflected in the way people dress in such a diverse city.

I am here to keep you informed of new trends, tricks-of-the trade (from my many years styling wardrobes for advertising) and to solve your daily and seasonal wardrobe issues. I am excited to hear from you with questions about style and fashion, as well as your challenges.

I love working with my plus-size clients because the before and after results tend to be so dramatic. My client Mary, a senior associate at a large Washington-based law firm, who falls between a size 16 and size 18, thought that covering up was her best strategy. While she was hiding her curves, she was also hiding from life. Accepting her body the way it is today – not ten or twenty pounds lighter sometime in the future – was the first step to her transformation. The second step was to visit the wonderful plus-size shop, Harper Greer, while on a business trip to San Francisco.

Knowing that Mary was going to be in town, I called ahead and spoke with Sales Manager John Kiskaddon about Mary’s shape, personality and color palette. In no time John assembled a number of outfits Mary didn’t just like – she loved them. She also loved shopping in a store where she didn’t feel the need to apologize for not being a size 10 or 12.

Don’t fret if you can’t get to San Francisco to shop. Harper Greer does a fabulous mail-order business and provides fabric swatches on request. Below are a few sketches from their new suit collection available now in sizes 12-26.

La bella figura, which translates to “the beautiful figure,” means more than just dressing well – the term encapsulates the Italian way of life, which emphasizes beauty, good image, aesthetics and manners. When planning your evening ensembles, keep these words in mind to display your bella figura: elegant, chic and modern.

• Graceful and timeless, this matte jersey dress from Anne Klein is a cinch to pack and flatters most body types.
• The stylish necklace will look fantastic with the dress’s neckline (and a bargain at only $132).

Let’s take a look at what a savvy traveler should pack when touring one of Europe’s most stylish cities.

• Shoes with pants – Yes, be comfortable on those cobblestone streets and look great at the same time with this stylish ankle boots in charcoal suede.
• Shoes with skirts – You’ll be comfy and chic in this Cole Haan Fiona Low Air pump with Nike technology. The chocolate embossed snake is perfetta!
• Handbag – If Gucci or Prada are too pricey for you, try this Carmen Zipper Tote by Furla, on sale for under $500.
• Wrap – In October you will probably get by with just a cashmere wrap instead of a coat, and it’s so much easier to pack and more elegant, no? This one from Nordstroms comes in 7 colors.
• Dress - For dressier days, this black dress from Eileen Fisher is a winner with its classic bateau neckline and three-quarter sleeves.  It will even take you from day to evening in a pinch.

Rome is not in any way, shape or form Six Flags or Disney, so kindly leave your walking shorts, running shoes and fanny packs  at home. (Editor’s Note: don’t call them ‘fanny’ packs in Europe or Australia since they mean something entirely different.)  Romans are very conscious of the way they look and make every effort to shine even while running errands. Make a great impression and step it up a notch during your trip. Buon viaggio!

1. Learn basic makeup application. It’s not easy to weed through all the products in Sephora and know what will work best on you.  A lesson with a professional makeup artist is invaluable.  Not only will you receive help figuring out which products work best for you, you will learn correct makeup application.  This is huge.  Proper application of concealer, for example, can make or break a face!  Share the cost of a makeup lesson with a friend and make it a ladies night.  It’s fun, and you will be amazed at the difference some techniques can make.  In Providence, RI, I use Kirsten Brusse.
2. Invest in a great haircut. Your hair is an accessory you wear everyday!  My go-to person in Providence is Lori Johnson.  Over the years she has gotten to know my hair, for better or worse.  She knows what will work and what won’t.  It is so much easier to style hair that has been cut to support the style.  If you can’t afford a great cut every time, get one twice a year and in between have other stylists follow the lines your fave has created.
3. Know your undergarment needs. You’ve heard of Spanx, now get some!   Shapers can make you look a size smaller and smooth away your lumps and bumps.  The right foundation garments can make all your clothes look better and more expensive.  Get a bra that fits and does the girls justice.  Nordstrom is known for their great bra fitters.  Getting measured is free and well worth your time.
4. Own a great pair of jeans. This requires a bit of work on your part.  You will probably need to try on lots of jeans in order to get a sense of which brand will be YOUR best fit.  My advice is to start at a department store like Barney’s or Bloomingdales – both have a dazzling array of denim and good customer service to help you make a choice.  Don’t feel pressured to buy right away though.  A little recessionista trick:  shop around for the brand, fit, and wash of jeans you want, then search ebay for the same pair.  If you don’t mind “pre-owned” denim, you can pay less than half of retail price.  A word to the wise:  ALWAYS check inseam length in ebay listings.  Most used jeans have been hemmed already and you will want to make sure they are not too short!
5. Make your clothes work better for you with double sided tape. This is a great, inexpensive way to temporarily alter your clothing.  I use Hollywood Fashion Tape for falling hemlines, plunging necklines, broken jewelry clasps – you name it.  Recently, I used it for a television shoot to do a faux hem on jeans one of the models was wearing.  Do the same when you want to pair jeans with ballet flats – iron the hem for the smoothest finish.  Let the hem back down when you’re ready to wear your highest of heels!

What’s not to love about the fashion from the islands in the North and Celtic Seas? There are so many options and so for today I decided to do a cute budget outfit for a casual office or a dressy weekend outing based from stores in the UK.

A dark wash bootcut jean is the perfect starting point to creating a smart casual outfit.

Add a classic, yet with a twist, white button down shirt. This is from All Saints and has got to be the coolest button-down I’ve seen in a while. Layer a checked shawl collar waistcoat (‘vest’ in the US) over the shirt. It’s cropped so that the bottom of the shirt shows off.

And of course, where would a stylish UK gal be without Topshop? Layer your outfit with this gorgeous blue wool-blend jacket.  It has a fitted waist in back and waterfall front – perfect for rectangles.

Add a cute studded bag, fringe styled ankle cowboy boots and a fun resin bracelet and you’re set for work or play. All for under 400 quid.

If you live in Canada, then you’ll find it relatively easy to shop online since most US shops ship to Canada.  But we couldn’t have a post about Canadian style without infusing a bit of savvy designers from the great land mass.

One designer that I love that is hard to find in the US is Teenflo. Now, I know what you’re thinking “We are not teen girls!” Also, wasn’t there a baby bottle company with a similar name?  In any case, Teenflo is not for teenage girls but for executive women.  Luckily, they have a few styles online but unfortunately you don’t get to see the breadth of what they produce. If you get a chance to visit Holt-Renfrew, they’re there.

Here’s a great outfit for going out in as the seasons transition:

• Teenflo blue jersey top.  With wide enough straps to cover your bra, I love the detailed draping and knotting at the neckline — this is a great style for any body type.
• Mackage leather jacket. A Canadian outerwear designer, Mackage makes some of the best coats.  This yummy jacket has just enough detail to keep it interesting and wearable for many years to come.
• Black twill slim pants by Chaiken.  Not a Canadian designer but if you don’t know about the huge 2-day sale of Chaiken and 7 For All Mankind happening now at Billion Dollar Babes, you better get there. Major deals!  And they ship internationally.
• Wearing a funky ankle boot adds tons of style to a cropped pant.  These Pedro Garcia Chelsey black boots are perfect for stomping around in Toronto or BC.
• If you’re into designer handbags and shoes, then Montreal boutique, Mona Moore, has you covered.  This Dries Van Noten clutch with embroidered gold circles is half off. And the clip-on gold earrings by Kenneth Jay Lane certainly pull it together. The earrings are at ShopBop.

If a retailer doesn’t ship outside of the US, there is a solution!  Bongo International provides you a U.S.-based address where you can have your shipments sent.  Then they consolidate your shipments for you and send them to you at 1/2 the cost of normal shipping rates. Instead of paying for each individual shipment, you pay for the US shipment and then one International shipment.  It’s a cool service and one I’d use if I lived outside the US.

This week we’re touring the English speaking countries around the world to help our global readers find something cute in their locale — or at least online places that ship internationally. First stop, Australia.

Spring is just around the corner and short skirts and dresses abound. Unfortunately, if you’re over 30 you really want to be careful about how short is TOO short. A good rule of thumb is to stand up straight with your hands at your side. If your skirt is shorter than the tips of your fingers, it’s too short.  And since we’re talking spring weather here, tights are not an option. But, a cute cropped pant is!

Here we show a embroidered lace day dress in black paired over a zip-leg cropped pant in grey. I prefer the day dress in white but the picture was just too difficult to feature  – the picture shown obviously isn’t so hot either.   I think the Australian online shops will need to train their models to stand still and show the product, don’t pose! It doesn’t help  shoppers in figuring out if it looks good on a body.

Okay, back to the outfit: accessories. Wearing a thin, patterned scarf instead of a necklace is a wonderful and stylish option for spring.  Or, you can try a long, ruffled owl necklace instead.

For shoes, a simple t-strap sandal will do in either a tan or black. Both are from US retailers that ship internationally — and the great thing is they are on sale!  The raffia rope bag is the perfect addition and will carry you through Summer.

For our North American readers, sizes in Australia are all over the place just like we are! But to determine your size, they are just like the UK where you add 4 (eg If you’re a size 8, then you want a 12.) Remember, it’s just a number.

Do you gravitate to your most comfortable pair of sweats and sneakers when it’s time to run your errands and do what’s necessary on the weekend to keep it all running smoothly at the homestead?

Having just spent the last week unpacking boxes and making my new townhouse in Alexandria a home, I was tempted to stay in my PJs and slog through the worst of it. However, I knew I’d feel and look a whole lot better if I took some time to look a bit more presentable as I went from errand to errand, and back to the house, only to run out again an hour later. After all, you never know who you might bump into at the hardware store, not to mention making a positive first impression on new neighbors!

• No need to sacrifice style for comfort with these cropped trousers from Talbots, on sale for $37.99. They’re a nice alternative to denim, especially in a hot climate.
• Paired with a slightly fitted ¾ sleeve cotton V-neck top and lightweight plaid scarf, you’ll feel like you’re still in your pajamas, but won’t look like it.
• Since moving from a two-level building to four, the right footwear is key for me these days. I love my Ellefly pull-ons from Columbia, especially in the Mud/lollipop color combo. Throw on a simple yet stylish double-breasted military style coat and you’re good for most any errand.
• Keep one or two of these versatile and practically indestructible Dimpa totes from Ikea with you as you run hither and yon. A big bargain at only $1.50 each.

When I think of going out, I think of Manhattan.  As fall approaches and the nights get cooler, there’s no place I’d rather be than meeting friends for cocktails and eating outside at one of my favorite restaurants.  I created this outfit with New York in mind and therefore included a change of shoes – you can only do so much walking in 4″ heels before you need some relief!

• If you want to create a more conservative look, you can switch out the distressed denim for a darker, cleaner pair, but I love the juxtaposition of these Slim Flare Destroyed jeans and this Son of Jon sequin tank.
• A Juicy Couture Shrunken Fit Jacket adds an air of sophistication (and warmth for cooler evenings).
• This Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Wristlet in gray is one of the season’s biggest colors.
• These L.A.M.B. platform sandals are soooo sexy!  (but I confess I would squeeze these  Elizabeth and James “June” flats into my clutch for sore feet in the wee hours…)

Fall on the east coast is such a relief after a hot and humid August. I think getting dressed is much more fun when you can layer and add a few things to make your outfit interesting.  What’s better than an ensemble of jeans, boots and a vest or leather jacket? This fall, the theme is strong, powerful dressing and silhouettes reminiscent of the 80’s – with a focus on the shoulder and volume on the top of the body.

• Vests were shown topping runway looks in everything from fur to knit. Want to rock the fur vest look? Go faux! This gorgeous (and animal-friendly) vest by Rebecca Taylor can top a dress or a pair of jeans.
• Before it gets too chilly, take advantage of the metallic trend with this cool tank. Because of the shine, you don’t need lots of accessories to complete the look – just a pair of great skinny jeans like these by J Brand.
• Leather is everywhere, in skirts, jackets and even pants! To add some tough girl chic, pair this leather jacket with a feminine dress. The contrast in textiles creates lots of visual interest.
• Last but not least, we all need a great pair of boots for fall. This year it’s all about the peep-toe bootie. Calvin Klein gives us this version in basic black that will go with everything!

Reader Question:

I currently live in NY, but am interviewing for several Silicon Valley mid-level roles (manager/director positions.) What is an appropriate interview outfit for the West Coast?

Wardrobe 911 Style Prescription:

It depends on the company but since you said Silicon Valley, I’m going to assume it’s high-tech.  Most high-tech firms have a business casual dress code or as the case with Facebook, don’t have one at all but enjoy Dress-UP Fridays.  Regardless, they need to relate to you so a one-color skirt suit would be too over the top. You don’t want them saying to each other after the interview, “She was qualified but she seemed too uptight for us.”   However, it’s still an interview and jackets along with dressing to impress are a requirement.

Here’s a sophisticated ensemble that looks great with or without the jacket (just in case they take you to lunch at an outdoor patio.) And, they individually are great building blocks for a business casual wardrobe.

• Silk plaid blouse that has a super flattering neckline and works well underneath a jacket.
• For pants, a darker gray color compared to the jacket will work perfectly. Here we chose a light charcoal pinstriped trouser. It blends well with the graphic plaid blouse because the scale is smaller and it’s in a stretch lightweight wool which is perfect for the Bay Area weather.
• Wear a fitted pearl gray jacket like this wool flannel version from J.Crew.
• Depending on your style and the personality of the company, try a suede grommet belt with a little color to pull your outfit together.  Here, I show a wine colored belt with gold detail to match the gold buttons on the jacket.
• For shoes, black or gray will work — these Arturo Chiang’s Desiree shoes and they come in slate and black. Plus, they go to 11!
• Carry a clean-lined tote to hold your resume such as this plum version by Longchamp. A less-expensive tote is found at New York & Company. Again, a black bag will also work well!

On a recent visit to the six-room shop we found the perfect Lily Pulitzer summer frock. A long, black Gucci evening gown with patent leather neckline detailing screamed red carpet va va voom. A brown alligator bag, the perfect accouterment for this fall season’s Mad Men inspired pencil skirt and sweater.

This month Helpers celebrates its anniversary by showcasing select designs from Geoffrey Beene’s collection from the 60’s through the 80’s. Museum quality ensembles not to be missed by true fashionistas.

All of the Helpers House treasures are generously donated; some from the closets of San Francisco’s leading ladies, others directly from the designer’s ateliers. Many of the women execs I work with are quickly able to put together outfits on their own for their nine-to-five work week, but seem to panic when it’s party time.

My $1500 wardrobe challenge focuses on getting dolled up for a night on the town while looking pretty, polished and still professional at a work-related event. You’ll notice I’ve added a rain jacket – given all the precipitation we’ve had in the mid-Atlantic this summer, you’ll want to have a chic wrap just in case the skies open as you exit that limo (hopefully!) or taxi cab.

The ensemble comes to a grand total of $1228. Consider spending the remaining $272 on a manicure, pedicure and a couple of pairs of $30 Power Panties by Spanx.

• Lined Stretch Silk Sheath Dress, by Anne Klein New York, $395. The deep V neckline is flattering on most women, and the A-line skirt with a hint of Spandex is also quite forgiving. In a delicious slate gray, available in sizes 6-16.

• Cotton and Nylon Hooded Coat, by Eileen Fisher, $195. A perfect match for a dressy evening, but it will also work well with less formal outfits. It’s a light layer with a hint of sheen that will add interest and keep that silk dress clean if you end up in the taxi and not the limo.

• Printed Resin Bar Clutch, by Tory Burch, $255 (on sale!). It was love at first sight when I saw this clutch at the Tory Burch boutique – unique, beautifully made, and did I mention it’s on sale?

• Stuart Weitzman Shashay Heels, $298. The color “fire quasar” is a perfect counterpoint to the gray dress and jacket – these peep-toe patent leather shoes sport a four- inch heel and are sophisticated without being over the top.

• Handmade Triple Cascade Earrings, in aquamarine and black onyx, $85. These earbobs give off just enough sparkle and movement for a work-related event after five. From Dasha Boutique.

One kind reader asked about what characterizes a “professional grade blouse,” and that’s a great starting point to today’s post – what to wear when the mercury rises, the humidity is like humus, and you’ve got to take Metro to the job interview or important client meeting.

Under your suit, you’ll want something that will make you look crisp and pulled together, while at the same time, keep you cool. This is where a sleeveless blouse with a no-iron finish comes to the rescue. A cotton or cotton-blend button front blouse shouldn’t pull at the bust line, and those with ample curves will want a blouse with darts or seaming to allow for shaping.

Another option is to select a shell made out of silk or a silk blend. To stretch your budget, buy a twin set and wear the shell under your suit, and wear the set with a pair of trousers or a skirt later in the week. I don’t like 100% cotton knits as a rule, because they can look too casual, and after a few washings tend to look worn and lose their edge.

When selecting your suit, think fabric, fit and fun, in that order. For a meeting in late June, July or August in the District, try tropical-weight wool suiting. Just the word “wool” may make a few of you out there cringe, but tropical weights are lighter than you think, breathe beautifully, and the wrinkle factor is low. Another alternative is cotton mixed with a bit of Lycra and perhaps a dash of linen.

Once you’ve decided on the fabric, be sure your suit fits you well. I’ve seen one too many ladies wearing jackets this summer with the sleeves rolled back, exposing the sleeve’s lining. Spend the $15 to have the sleeves shortened – it will make a huge difference and you won’t look like you’re wearing someone else’s jacket.

Now comes the fun part.  Because it’s summer, many Washingtonians wear seersucker, the quintessential summertime fabric. I love seersucker and find it quite appropriate for just about any summer meeting. Blue and white is the classic, but it also comes in brown, pink and beige stripes. If seersucker isn’t your glass of iced tea, consider pairing that more conservative wool or cotton-blend suit with a brightly colored top and shoes with either an open back or open toe, but not both. It’s still the capital, after all.

This small cobalt multi color tote adds a perfect touch to your look.

Just because Washington isn’t the most fashion forward city in the world doesn’t mean it should be ignored completely. After all, it’s the capital for crying out loud! Thank goodness our new First Lady has put the District on the fashion map – something not even attempted by previous administrations going back who knows how far – I’m thinking Nancy, sort of, and then Jackie.

I, your humble Washington Correspondent, have been given the privilege of letting readers know what’s going on style-wise in DC. Check back every other week, and you’ll see that our nation’s headquarters is far from the conservative, seer-sucker-May-through-September place it’s alleged to be.

We’ll examine ways to balance a look that conveys confidence and competence, without compromising on style. We’ll look to politicians, entrepreneurs, local celebs, and inside-the-beltway movers and shakers to see what’s what when it comes to dressing and expressing oneself in this mid-Atlantic hotspot. As a graduate of Wardrobe911’s Fashion Stylist Bootcamp, I’m prepared to talk line, design, color and cut. I’m also ready to dish some dirt and point out fashion missteps wherever they might occur.

But who is Gretchen Neels? Briefly, I’m Founder & CEO of Neels & Company, Inc., a training and consulting firm. As a former resident of Washington, DC, I am returning after a nine-year stint in Boston, gladly trading the cold and snow for heat and humidity. I’m early 40’s and visiting NYC at the end of March. I need help with What to Wear in NYC!! I’ll be attending 2 Broadway shows and going to Pier 61 for a Spirit Dinner Cruise among other things and shopping. Will be in NYC over Easter weekend. I’m from the Dallas area, so suggestions for where to find great bargains for a 5 day 4 night trip would be awesome.

Wardrobe 911’s Style Prescription:

Your trip to NYC is the perfect illustration why many of us find ourselves over packing, shopping at the last minute, and taking way more than we need!  The easiest way to prepare for your trip (and be kind to your wallet) is to limit your wardrobe to 1-2 neutral colors and bring just a few colorful tops and accessories to change things up.  You should only bring 4 bottoms and one dress to base your outfits on.

I think limiting what we pack is easier said than done because we fear that we won’t have the right outfit for a certain occasion.  That is probably why our closets are packed yet we only wear about 15 percent of it.  Trust me, you really won’t need more than that — take the leap and you’ll be a converted light traveler for the rest of your life.

For NYC, black is the color of choice so I would keep your basics to that so that you blend in well with the natives.  You should already have a pair of great black and charcoal pants and some dark wash jeans.  Those are necessities to every woman’s wardrobe.  Since jeans are bulky, wear them on the plane with a colorful tee and your chunkiest sweater instead of packing them.  Wear your heaviest shoes (or flat boots!) on the plane as well.  Pack some cute black patent peep-toes for the rest of your outfits.  Now that we have your travel outfit, let’s look at what to throw in your carry on.

3 Bottoms:  Black pants, charcoal pants, black skirt (remember, you are wearing your jeans on the plane and I guarantee you will wear them 2-3 times during your trip)

1 Dress: preferably jersey (so it doesn’t wrinkle) and in a dark neutral or color

6 Tops: Black top, black halter top or other evening top, tee in a flattering color (worn on plane), oatmeal top, printed or colorful blouse

2 Jackets/Cardis:  Thin colorful cardi, stylish black jacket (you should already have these in your wardrobe)
