Happy New Year!
Hopefully your 2009 has gotten off to a good start. This month and next is going to be busy as I’ll be speaking at a few events as well as traveling out to NYC, DC and Philadelphia in February. Check out our new schedule page to see what’s going on and if Wardrobe 911 might be coming to your area!
If you haven’t already registered for our Stylist Bootcamp, today is the last day to take advantage of our payment plan! The boot camp is looking to be amazing with in-store styling challenges that test your skills and power sessions that allow you to practice what you’ve learned. The boot camp is focused on providing you with the technical skills every great stylist needs and it also gives you the opportunity to become a part of our collective.
Tonight is New Year’s Eve. As you’re busy getting ready for the night’s festivities, you may want to ensure your 2009 is a lucky year. Apparently wearing pink panties
the night of brings such luck. Who knew?
Apparently those that live in South America believe that the good luck only comes if your best girlfriend gives you the pink panties as a gift. And you must sleep in them — or at least wake up with them on in the New Year! So, grab some pink and wake up lucky. Happy New Years!!
A Reader Asks:
I have two pairs of high boots that I’m trying to figure out how to wear. The hitch is, I’m plus sized and I’m trying to find a way to wear them where my hips don’t look absolutely huge! Help please?! Thanks!
Wardrobe 911’s Style Prescription:
The key to wearing boots is ensuring that width and proportion of the boot balances with your outfit. For example, if you wear a pull-on fabric boot which is tight around your calves over jeans, you would look like a drumstick. No one, no matter their size, looks good in that. The focus is to create a long, lean look.
Since you’re concerned about your hips, look for jeans and pants that have a wider leg
so that they drop straight from your hip instead of going in at the top part of your thigh. This means you wear your boots underneath the jeans — a bit of the detail still peeks out which is fun. If you’re dying to try the “jeans in boots” look, my recommendation is to find some capri jeans that fit you nicely in the hip area or grab your favorite pair of boot-cut
pants and crop them right at the calf. They are much easier to tuck into a knee-high boot and won’t bulk up! Wear a cute cross-front top
that skims the tummy with a structured casual fleece jacket
and your look becomes casual chic.
Knee-high boots also look great with flared-skirt dresses such as this criss-cross dress from Kiyonna or a fun skirt that hits below the knee like this leather trim version.
Wear a great earring to pull it all together.
The last week of 2008 finds most of us re-visiting the year and trying to gain some semblance of what we learned, what inspired us, and what we hope to change in the new year. It’s been a tough year for a lot of us and with that, most long for (and welcome!) a change of scene — something that lifts our spirits. The early 19th century writer, Arthur Benson, was known to have said “Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.”
This insightful statement still remains true in the 21st century. The change we seek needs to happen on the inside first for anything to have lasting effect. Sometimes we think that someone in our exterior world is going to change us and make our lives better. That is not the case. Only we have the power to change ourselves. This I know to be true as it is something I see on a daily basis in the work I do. I am not changing you. YOU are changing YOU. Sometimes working on the outside will give your spirit a lift and the positive feelings about yourself soon follow. And other times our spirits go through amazing and beautiful transformations where we then want our outside to match what’s on the inside. Whatever the case for you, I leave you words of inspiration to print out and hopefully bring a ‘change of scene’ to the most beautiful part of you — your spirit.
From all of us here at Wardrobe 911 we wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and happy Hanukkah holiday!
If you have a “classic with a twist” black sheath dress and need to make it work for Christmas Eve and for New Year’s Eve, here’s some inspiration for you.
The Dress:
LOVE YAYA Pepper Dress
which is budget friendly and versatile. The square neckline is flattering and the length is sassy enough for a special night out or for a more subdued event if you wear tights. Another great dress option is the Catherine Malandrino dress
with crochet detail. It’s form fitting in all the right places. Catherine Malandrino runs small so go up one size!
